Did you know you can become a happier person by nurturing relationships, practicing gratitude and trying new experiences? And the benefits include having a lower risk of cardiovascular issues, being more productive at work and living longer! But what is happiness?Happiness is the combination of how satisfied you are with life and how you feel day to day.
How would you like to feel at least 40% happier? The great news is that this is entirely achievable because your happiness is controlled by your thoughts, actions and behaviour.
Coaching is a highly effective way of understanding the thoughts and beliefs that are standing in the way of happiness. By changing your thoughts it directly impacts on your actions and behaviour.
You have a choice about how you feel! Happiness is a skill and like all skills it requires practice. You have the ability to control how you feel. Recognise you have a choice.
This is what happiness is not…feeling happy or OK all the time. Having all the money in the world (yes money gives you financial freedom but this isn’t the same as happiness), avoidance of the bad stuff in our lives (burying our heads is not a good idea), and happiness is not a final destination. It is a state of mind.
What happiness could mean in your life…greater productivity at work (and at home!), solid friendships, helping and supporting others, more creative problem solving.
Increase your happiness in the long run by…nurturing friendships, having new experiences, helping others and being grateful for things in your life. My top tip is to write a list before bed of all the things you are grateful for.
Things that will kill your happiness over time…comparing yourself to others (check out my last blog), a lack of close friendship, holding on to resentment.
Roll with the punches…research shows that those people who face adversity lead happier lives than those who don’t experience adversity. Why? Because adversity helps to make sense of life’s challenges by helping us to understand ourselves better, increase our resilience, cope better with situations that can make us feel stressed and be more optimistic about the future.
Understand your purpose and value…it isn’t something we think about very often yet it underpins who we are. I do a values exercise with my clients all the time because it is extremely helpful and they are staggered by the clarity they get as a result. They recognise themselves and it feels really good. It helps to form decision making and life choices. It is incredibly powerful.
Be grateful…for what you have. Write a list before bed. Research has shown that those people who wrote a list once a week for six weeks experienced less depression for up to 6 months, they felt happier. They also reported a better quality of sleep and they engaged in healthy behaviour such as exercise.
